Strategic, technical and implementation services across the spectrum of sustainable transport solutions

Ricardo-AEA's team of transport specialists works with a wide variety of business and Government clients to achieve a sustainable, low carbon future for all modes of transport. Our expertise covers carbon emissions and air quality, vehicles, fuels and driver behaviour across road, rail, air and sea. Our work ranges from leading edge technical research and policy, through to helping fleet operators reduce fuel consumption and improve their operational efficiency.

Our capabilities include:

  • Measurement and modeling of transport emissions (CO2, SO2, PM10, NOx)
  • Deep understanding of low carbon transport technology - both vehicles and fuels
  • Practical, hands on knowledge of freight and fleet best practice and improving operational efficiency
  • Carbon footprint assessment and carbon life cycle analysis
  • Full-spectrum assessment of transport policy and strategy, comprising environmental, economic, social and health impacts
  • Regulatory compliance and strategy
  • Assessment of climate change impact on transport infrastructure

We provide our clients with access to the UK’s leading experts on transport emissions. We manage the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (NAEI) on behalf of the UK Government. Through this work, we are responsible for providing Government with annual official estimates of emissions from all sources, including the transport sector.

Our broad team integrates technical understanding with insight into policy and its implementation. Our 40 sustainable transport consultants have ongoing experience of working with the major stakeholders in the transport sector. At the operational level, we combine project management capability with technical expertise to achieve substantial cost and carbon reductions for our clients.

Our continuing input to policy means that we have an in-depth understanding of current and future strategic environmental challenges facing the transport sector.

The work we undertake has included modelling emission and comparing transport modes for a major freight operator, managing behaviour change programmes on behalf of Government through implementing SAFED, the Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving training programmes. Ricardo-AEA has played a key role in the Gallagher review of the indirect effects of bio-fuels in 2008 and has undertaken a number of studies for both Government and business clients to understand the wider impacts of transport activities. We are also involved in ongoing work to model the impacts of current and future rail infrastructure development on air quality, greenhouse gas emissions and noise.
