New combined heat and power (CHP) assessment tool launched by DECC

Since this article was published, AEA Technology plc’s business, operating assets and employees were acquired on the 8 November 2012 by Ricardo plc and transferred to a new subsidiary, Ricardo-AEA Ltd. All employees were transferred to Ricardo-AEA Ltd as part of the acquisition and remain available for the execution of all projects via the new company, as are the entire capability and resources previously represented by AEA Technology plc. All individuals remained at previous locations with all offices being retained.

DECC has launched a new software utility on its CHP Focus website. Developed by AEA Technology plc, ‘CHP Assessment' is a free online tool that allows anyone with an interest in developing a CHP scheme to get a first impression of the suitability of this technology for their organisation.

By entering some basic site data, along with energy costs and the site's heat demand, the tool allows users to see at what scale CHP should be technically feasible, how much money CHP can save the organisation and the level of carbon savings that will be achieved.

CHP is a highly efficient generation technology where electricity and heat are generated as part of the same process and it has a vital role in helping the UK meet its carbon targets. It is suitable for a whole range of applications including industrial plants, schools, hospitals, and district heating schemes.
