Government suppliers report 32 million tonnes of carbon dioxide savings

Since this article was published, AEA Technology plc’s business, operating assets and employees were acquired on the 8 November 2012 by Ricardo plc and transferred to a new subsidiary, Ricardo-AEA Ltd. All employees were transferred to Ricardo-AEA Ltd as part of the acquisition and remain available for the execution of all projects via the new company, as are the entire capability and resources previously represented by AEA Technology plc. All individuals remained at previous locations with all offices being retained. 

The Carbon Disclosure Project, in partnership with AEA Technology plc has published the 2010 Public Procurement Programme Report 

for the UK Government and the Greater London Authority (GLA) Group.Download CDP Report

The report gives detailed insight into the greenhouse gas emissions and climate change impact on the Government's supply chain.  The findings will provide crucial support to the Government as it strives to become the ‘greenest government ever', saving £81 billion and increasing transparency in its operations.

In total, 25 government departments and non-departmental bodies participated in the programme, as well as the GLA Group and five NHS bodies; each asking their suppliers to disclose their emissions and activities. The number of participating suppliers in the programme has increased by more than 60% since 2009. 

Christine St John Cox, AEA's Knowledge Leader for Carbon Management, and key contributor to the report commented:

"As well as highlighting how Government suppliers have saved 32 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, the 2010 disclosure shows a growing trend to make climate change a board level discussion point.  The new challenge is for organisations to embed carbon and wider sustainability metrics into everyday decision-making and strategic planning. This includes climate change adaptation - where only 12% of companies currently have an adaptation strategy in place"

This is the second year running that AEA has supported CDP, which is recognised as "the gold standard for carbon reporting" (Hilary Benn, former Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs).
